The Story That Shaped My CareerĀ āĀ And Eventually Led Me To Write My Book
Yep, it's true... Before I became a speech-language pathologist, I worked as a behavioral therapist for a little girl in a private school. My job was simple: keep her behaviors to a minimum so she wouldn't disrupt the classroom. But the more time I spent with her, the more I realized something wasn't adding up. Everyone around me was focused on changing her behavior, while I couldn't stop wondering why she was struggling in the first place.
On this live show we'll unpack the story of the little girl who changed everything I thought I knew about therapy. We'll talk about what it was really like working as a behavioral therapist, the questions that made me begin challenging compliance-based approaches, and how those experiences eventually led me toward a sensory-based, neuroaffirming framework. We'll also explore how this journey shaped the ideas behind my book and why supporting regulation, connection, and authentic engagement became the foundation of everything I teach today.
On thisĀ episode, you'll learn:
-
Why behavior-focused approaches often miss the deeper reason a child is struggling
-
The questions that helped me move beyond compliance and toward a neuroaffirming perspective
-
How my experiences as a behavioral therapist influenced the philosophy behind my book
- How to begin shifting from behavior management toward connection, regulation, and meaningful engagement
- And more!
